New Nightjet: Is ÖBB’s New Sleeper the Dream Ticket?: The launch of ÖBB’s Siemens-built Nightjet trains at he end of 2023 was a milestone for the revival of overnight trains in Europe, representing the first significant investment in new overnight stock for many years. Toma Bacic was on the first revenue-earning service from Wien to Hamburg and discovered that while the rolling stock is world class, there are still some long-standing railway issues to overcome.
Winter on the Berninabahn: Reaching 2253m above sea level with a maximum gradient of 7%, the metre-gauge Berninabahn is the third-highest railway in Switzerland and one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. Roma Tiburtina: A High-Speed Hub for the Italian Capital: Andrew Thompson looks at how Roma Tiburtina was redeveloped to provide a through station for north-south high-speed services traversing the city.
Budapest-Hegyeshalom Diesel Diversions: The complete closure of the Budapest-Hegyeshalom line, Hungary’s main rail link with western Europe, between late October and mid-November resulted in the diversion of numerous freight trains over the non-electrified Komarom-Szekesfehervar line with vintage diesels providing traction. Ferenc Joo examines the works undertaken on Line 1 and how the diversions were managed.
Industrial Steam at Solvayovy Iomy: A hidden gem in the forested hills to the south-west of Praha, the industrial railway and outdoor museum at Salvayovy Iomy is home to a sizeable collection of 600 mm gauge locomotives. Andrew Thompson visits this unique heritage railway.
