The November 2022 issue of Today’s Railways UK is full of interesting articles and features covering all aspects of Britain’s railways, plus all the very latest news from across Britain’s railway network. This month we look in depth at new trains on Britain’s railways, but we also include all our regular monthly sections covering light rail, heritage railways, preservation and railtours, with readers’ letters and our grumpy old man also in attendance.

New Trains for the UK on Display at Innotrans: The bi-annual InnoTrans international railway trade show in Berlin has contained plenty of British interest for the last few years and 2022 was no different. This was the first show since 2018 as the event in 2020 was cancelled because of the pandemic. The show opened on 20 September and ran for four days with a large outdoor display featuring dozens of trains, trams and engineering vehicles. The highlights included two new Stadler trains for Transport for Wales, giving most attendees their first opportunity to look at the first Class 398 and 756 units.
Assisting & Assistance: Driver John Leach, author of Platform 5’s recently published Diesel Drive Manual book takes us through what happens when a locomotive may fail in service and needs to be assisted, with some memories of personal experiences of rescuing trains on the main line in the 1970s.
Pride on our Trains: In recent years we have seen a proliferation of “Trainbows” – trains displaying Pride rainbows. We present a selection from across the country.
Riding the Welsh Marches: Newport to Hereford: An important west to north route runs from Newport in the south, north towards Hereford, Shrewsbury and Crewe. From the very earliest days of railways it has been a battle ground, major companies such as the Great Western and London North Western competing for the lucrative South Wales coalfield market. Mark Lee Inman explores this route, with part 1 this month taking us from Newport to Hereford.

The Caledonian Railway: The Caledonian Railway is one of the few heritage railways hat hasn’t yet been featured in Today’s Railways UK. Andy Chard provides an overview of the line and reports on a recent visit.
