The July 2024 issue of Today’s Railways UK is full of interesting articles and features covering all aspects of Britain’s railways, plus all the very latest news from across Britain’s railway network. This month we look in depth at new trains on Britain’s railways, but we also include all our regular monthly sections covering light rail, heritage railways, preservation and railtours, with readers’ letters and our grumpy old man also in attendance.
Feature articles this month include:
If You Build It, Will They Come?: There is always plenty of argument over whether the case for building new railways, or reopening old ones, has been made. Promoters and rail campaigners say “Build it and they will come”. Yet while a new railways is nice to have, the Treasury – and maybe the wider public – can take convincing. Nick Comfort examines the statistics.
From Goblins to Suffragettes: Riding Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside: Mark Lee Inman visits the line from Gospel Oak to Barking and Barking Riverside, for many years known as the “GOBLIN” but recently christened the “Suffragette Line” by Transport for London as part of its rebranding of the London Overground lines. Recent years have seen electrification and new rolling stock transform an urban backwater into a busy route for both passenger and freight services.
Railways of Cornwall: Keith Barrow recently published his book “Railways of Cornwall: A Decade of Change” looking at the Cornish Main Line from Saltash to Penzance. Keith presents a selections of his photos that didn’t find room in the book.
A Taste of TransPennine Express: The West Coast Kitchen: 20 May saw the official launce of Transpennine Express’s West Coast Kitchen, a new First Class offer for users of its services between Liverpool/Manchester and Edinburgh/Glasgow. Ian Beardsley takes a trip to Scotland to sample the new menu.
